The Deltas, Zetas & E.M.O.C..All UNCENSORED!

Spring  Break Is Here! Are You Prepared?

While  preparing the departure of students for Spring Break 2013, This packed  event focused on topics that included: spring break do’s and don’t’s , breaking the guy and girl code, and other exclusive talks that kept the room not only informed, but entertaining to say the least. For the many conversations that were taking place, the room was dare I say “uncensored!”The discussion was held at The University of Memphis campus, facilitated by William Young, junior Journalism major, along with fellow commentator  Alelia Higgenbottom, junior, sociology major. The “Uncensored” meetings gave urban intellectuals a chance to release the tension of academic studies off their minds.

These steamy tell- all sessions that were filled to the capacity of Greek students, allows them to get to know one another and converse on a down to earth tone. It seemed to be a delightful evening for the students, who answered questions on relationships, friendships, and the consequences of personal real-life scenarios that coincide with the student’s daily lives. Empowered Men of Color (E.M.O.C) was founded in 2003 by a select number of malesto increase the retention rates of minority men on campus. EMOC has won many awards, including Minority Organization two years in a row and last semester there were over 30 members with a grade point average ranging from 3.0 or above.

Marcus Bowles- current President Of EMOC

Many of the E.M.O.C members are very active on campus, whether it is writing for the school newspaper, which is the Daily Helmsman or being Frosh Camp counselors and also being involved in Student Government Association.  Every year E.M.O.C brings in professional speakers to empower the audience of the E.M.O.C Men’s Conference. Young Memphis Gay couple Marries

Newlyweds David and Tre'Darrious Anderson are natives to Memphis,Tennessee. They are one of the youngest Gay couples from the area who took part in having a commitment ceremony in Washington, D.C, where gay marriage has been legalized since April 9, 2009.

It was reported by Roz Edward from the Tri-State Defender, that the two young men met in the month of july of 2010. David and Tre'Darrious made the plans to become official on January 17,2013, which is the day they applied for their marriage liscence in Washington.

The Ceremony took place in front of the Lincon Memorial and the couple flew back to Memphis for a personal celebration with exclusive invited guests.

Gay marriage has not yet been legalized in Memphis, Tennessee. Memphis's local newspaper The Commercial Appeal reported in June of last year that "The Shelby County Democratic Party was the first in Tennessee to voice approval of President Barack Obama's announcement in support of gay marriage".

Justin Joy, chairman of the Shelby County Republican Party, told The Commercial
Appeal that "a majority of Tennessee residents oppose gay marriage".

Prosecutors have made their mind up with the decision on 12 former Florida A&M University band members who are being charged for the death of 26 year old Robert Champion.
It is said to appear as a hazing death. Hazing is the practice of rituals and other activities involving harassment, abuse or humiliation used as a way of initiating a person into a group.
Ten of the band members are being charged with felony hazing, while the other two defendants are facing crucial manslaughter charges MSN blogger Kyle Hightower reports.
Champion died in Orlando in November 2011 after he collapsed after what prosecutors say was a savage beating during a hazing ritual. It happened on a bus parked in a hotel parking lot after Florida A&M played Bethune-Cookman in their annual rivalry football game.
Authorities say Champion had bruises on his chest, arms, shoulder and back and died of internal bleeding. Witnesses told emergency dispatchers that the drum major was vomiting before he was found unresponsive aboard the bus.

So how do feel about this situation? should the entire group carry the charge of manslaughter? When does hazing a student goes over the edge of no return? leave a comment for The Phoinix and tell us what you know.
