“My First Time” review :Mondays at the Rumba Room

“Laid back and sexy at the Rumba Room” on open Mic Night.

The night was humid and yet still tempting for one to roam around Memphis on a Monday. I know what your thinking...Monday? Really? Well I'm here to say that yes there are things to do in MEMPHIS on a weekday and one event in mind would have to be the Rumba Room located on Main Street.

DSC03083

The event was packed with local artist who were there to showcase their eccentric talents to a relaxed yet eager audience. Although the lists is very long to mention (no lie, everybody was doing their thing on the stage!) The acts included Ramon "Rhetoric" Jones, Terrell "Tshark" Sharkey Brandon "Eso" Tolson and Albert Akpotu, entrepreneur and songwriter Juju Bushman amongst a slew of other great artists that blew my friends and I away. The poetry, music, and various forms of hormonal art that were displayed this past Monday were enjoyable for anyone with an open mind. You know who YOU are, although you get dressed for that same club every Friday night you crave to leave the limelight of the usual club routine in return for something brand new, like creative artistry for the mind, body, and soul.

DSC03091And let me please say that all are welcome, the entire room was a melting pot of various races, ages and persuasions to say the least, and as I do try to keep myself "politically correct" when it comes to talking about my beautiful Memphians, for some reason negativity spreads worse than the common cold in Memphis, and people do not like what they do not know or understand (more on this topic in future post).

BE U Beauty Organics

Angelica Coleman is an entrepreneur that believes that your products should work with you NOT against you.  The name Be U Beauty Organics will soon ring a tune in the ears of people who are looking for a local brand with a personal touch. Angelica has the “hustle gene” instilled in her; being raised in a family who has ample amount of experience in the beauty/business industry.

The majority of Angelicas earlier years consisted on fighting the battle that many women with natural or relaxed hair experience, which is finding a product that works with your hair not against it. And though she found some that were great and not so great, she soon realized that many of the products did not seem to be natural, containing harsh products that are known to strip the hairs cortex and retains the water it needs to be luscious an manageable.

Most of the people do not realize that common skincare products have toxic chemicals can that can simply ruin their skin and health. All natural and vegan products are deemed to be healthier indeed, and that why so many people are catching on to these trending products. Coleman understood the need to go natural in Memphis, Tennessee, where there are many women who are interested in products that dont contain sulfates or parabens like propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl.

BeUBeauty Organics is considered a “lifestyle brand” in which it is targeted towards assisting women who are very active in their everyday lives. Whether you are a full-time mom, yoga instructor, or just a productive college student BeUBeauty is the brand that fits your everyday life.
Angelica has spent countless hours researching and perfecting her hand-crafted concoctions, to finally find many formulas that works with making your body healthy. The list of products ranges from  a unique and tantalizing Hair Growth oil, an aerated and whipped body butter that from personal use seems to last all day!. Angelica has even created a vegan soap called “Vegan Mango Delight” that is a facial/body cleanser with all natural ingredients such as olive & coconut oil as well as Shea butter.

U Beauty Organics brand carries an array of healthy vegan and/or organically produced products that will sure to leave your entire body happy from head to toe. “Its great to have good products, but some people may need organic and vegan products which are healthier for you” says Angelica.

Does Memphis Really Have Nothing to Offer?

For some reason, it has been a norm for people to say “there is nothing to do in Memphis”. I want to be the first to say that I have fell victim to this myself. I would constantly complain about not enough attractions for the “Elvis-immune”, not enough tasteful restaurants, not enough of anything! But one day while complaining on the lack of anything to do I realized that maybe Ive never tried to looking in the right places for anything to do! I mean really if you think about it, in todays overactive internet world, you are either given dates to different big name venues or concerts happening in Memphis that is usually sponsored by the same top companies, or B: Your friend scurries you out the house to tag-along to a place last minute or so (this is usually my case). Im not saying that these are not reliable ways to find something to do in the Bluff City, those are just the same ways of going about it, and maybe trying a different way would be better. Now when I say different, its really not that at all, what Im really saying is-quit looking in the obvious places that youre used to. For example, If every Friday night I follow the same promoter or close friends for the same events hosted on the same day of the week and I attend every time, sooner or later Im going to hate it and Im going to complain. Thats normal and its a part of being human. So let help me help you switch it up with a couple of quick tips!

1. Be spontaneous in your search

Be open to try new experiences, and dont be scared to step outside of the box, if you happen to pass a bar you have always thought of going to but never cared to stop to go in, make it a reason the next time you pass to try it out. You may have found a new kick- it spot.

2.  Find another source To Find Sources.

True, the internet is a permanent way to find info on the hottest events, but are you looking in the right place? Find out what are you interested in (dancing, singing, poetry, networking, etc.,) and find events that cater exclusively to those interests. The Memphis Flyer is a great alternative newspaper that has a list of upcoming events. Another must read is Grace Magazine, and for the kids Jabber Blabber and Memphis Parent Magazine just to name a few. You can find these at your nearest Kroger Grocery stores I pick them up all the time.

3. Blogs, Blogs, blogs!

Believe it or not, there are blogs made in Memphis, and many of them are resourceful. A list of them are below, and just like those Mid-South newspapers & magazines they all have info on many events that are usually low in price & exclusive, locally produced, and just bursting with fun (for real for real!)

•Urban Black Thoughts

The author of this blog calls himself the “ Painter of written pictures”, and the blog proves him right! There are various discussions on hot topics as well as present and past events featured, and the poet/motivational speaker Timothy "Urban Thoughts" Moore has been selected  for MTENZI 2013 Spoken Word Artist of the Year in Memphis and the region!

• I Love Memphis Blog

I Love Memphis blog is  owned by the lovely Kerry Crawford, and this well-known blog has an insider\'s guide to the best food, music, events, culture and things to do in Memphis, Tennessee.

• Memphis top food blogs - Urbanspoon

This website helps you choose a city to find everything about local restaurants. See restaurant menus. Read reviews and recommendations from critics, foodie blogs, and everything in between. Go ahead and find yourself at a brand new lunch spot!

• Love Live Life

Although this is a website, It features some of the hottest venues in memphis, and it is the ultimate spot to view some of the newest photos through the eyes of the Life-Live-Life.net photography crew.

4. Keep Yo A** at the house!

Ok so Im a bit too much right now, but I have caught your attention. Who says you cant have fun at home with your family? If you have Wi-Fi and a Sony Ps3, You can make it karaoke night with the girls at the next Love and Hip Hop ATL watching party (thats another suggestion I want to host a Scandal watch party soon!)Have your wine glasses ready, get the girls or family together and enjoy each other sound a hot mess!

5. Find some new Friends!

Well not exactly new, but Im pretty sure that if youre cool with a group you call your friends you have the same interests, and that gets boring-quickly. Go ahead and agree to go out with your co-workers that always invite you to their parties or gatherings after work.

6. Just Do It!

This goes back to step 1.  I made a decision last night to get dressed and get out of the house, and for no particular reason at all. The Memphis Urban League of Professionals hosted a networking event last night at Alfreds, so I decided to just get out the house and go on Beale Street. The air last night was crisp, and warm enough to enjoy what the night had to offer. I enjoyed a live band playing “Brick House” and found a great gift shop called Strange Cargo right on Beale street. They have a lot of quirky stuff, and I have the pictures to prove it. I enjoyed myself down there, and cant wait to just get up and do it again.

So there you have it, and now I want to hear from you.
